Day 7: Fes to Auberge Yasmina Camp

This morning we were up at 5.30 for a 6am breakfast, 6.45 bags to bus and 7am bus departure. The drive is expected to take 8.5 hours out to Merzouga.

We drove through the rain with windows fogged up completely, and temperatures somewhere between 12-15 degrees Celsius. We stopped briefly to stretch our legs in Ifrane to take a picture of a Lion statue in the rain and then continued on our way. After 1.5 hours we stopped for a coffee break in the mid atlas mountains.

Lunch was a stop with a buffet with some nice dates and lots of date trees on the property. We also had a stop for buying water where Abdul bought us a box of Medula dates to share which were so soft. We stopped for a quick photo opportunity of the valley of the date palms.

The Yasmina desert camp is a few kilometres off the main road. We had a quick walking induction of the camp/hotel and our tents. Then we ran in through the rain to put our bags away and meet for afternoon drinks and games. At 5.30pm we were scheduled to depart for a camel ride across the Sahara for sunset photos however, due to the rain this was rescheduled for tomorrow morning. We played Harry Potter trivial pursuit without the board and with my deck of cards, we played spoons and King’s Corner. Then we had a lovely dinner of couscous and meat and vegetables and dessert was a custard tart. After dinner we lit a fire and had s’mores courtesy of a lovely American lady in our group. By 10pm we were ready for bed. We’re up early tomorrow for camel ride at sunrise!

Tips:

The food the majority of the time we were at Yasmina Desert camp was divine!
