Daintree Dreaming Day 4

After it poured rain overnight, we woke to a drizzly green morning. It was such a joy to experience the rain whilst staying in the Daintree. We were treated to breakfast at On The Turps at the Heritage Lodge before lazily making our way up to the northernmost point of Cape Tribulation (that is accessible by car and not 4WD).

On the way, we stopped in at the Marrdja Botanical Boardwalk for a quick circuit in the drizzle before driving through the weather to a sunny Myall Beach. Once again, we found ourselves on the crystal blue shore of an empty beach. We were the only two people on the sand as far as the eye could see. The sheer size and density of the rainforest never cease to amaze me, especially in contrast to the white sand and blue ocean it meets.

It wouldn’t be a trip to Cape Tribulation without a visit to the Kulki Beach Lookout. Famous internationally as ‘where the Rainforest meets the Reef’, this point in Far North Queensland is the only place on the planet where two UNESCO World Heritage Sites come together, The Rainforest of the Wet Tropics and the Great Barrier Reef. The sun crept out from behind the clouds, and we were treated to a glorious view of the bay with crystal clear waters and a green surround. It is also important to point out that we were extremely lucky with our timing. The weather for the preceding seven days had been torrential rain, and the forecast for the week following our departure also turned wet.

We made our way to Whet Café for lunch (with what seemed like every other patron in town!) and enjoyed burgers and milkshakes. Checking in to our accommodation, the Safari Lodge, we were treated to a beautiful little ensuited cabin. Dinner recommendations came at us from every direction, with no shortage of incredible food in the region. After narrowing down our options, we decided to take a drive out to the Cape Tribulation Campground, where the lure of woodfired pizzas was too much to resist.

The Sand Bar Pizza menu was short and sweet, and incredibly cost-effective. We ordered the Dingo and the Sandy Bum; both were scrumptious!
