Zurich, Switzerland

Welcome back, my literary friends!

Without a doubt, Switzerland has to be one of my favourite countries in Europe. The alps, the greenery, the cows with their bells. What more could you ask for? Wait, I know, chocolate!!

Due to the pricey nature of Switzerland (in general) and Zurich (in particular) an AirBnB was the way to go, and therefore ended up staying near the Bahnhof Wiedikon tram station, about a 5 minute ride from central Zurich. The tourist ‘todo’ list for Zurich was not very long, mostly including walks around the city and the Lindt Home of Chocolate experience.

What is an international experience without a little brunch? Babu’s won the right, and not only were the bacon and eggs amazing; I couldn’t help but take my leftover bread to go; it was that good!

A short walk saw the Swiss National Museum come into view. Despite its historic architecture, this building contains some modern history of Switzerland and be warned, it is much bigger than it looks! Also, if you purchase a Zurich Card for public transport (available from any ticket machine at stops), several local sites include free entry. Just show the administrators your Zurich Card (ticket) when you arrive. If you catch transport throughout the day and visit one or two of the free 'attractions' then the Zurich Card is well worth the price.

Next up, catch the tram a few stops to Romerhof to ride the Dolderbahn up the side of Dolder. At the top are lovely views across Zurich, including a beautiful (and very expensive) hotel perched on the hill. There are several hikes and mountainside tracks at the top of the hill as well as an ice rink and driving range.

Wander on foot through the city from clock tower to clock tower, taking in the sunshine and the local culture. If you're up for another train ride, jump on board and head toward Uetliberg for a panoramic view of Zurich and Lake Zurich. On a clear day, the views are sweeping and glorious.

Last but not least, who could forget the Lindt museum, the home of chocolate? As someone who adores chocolate, I couldn't go past the opportunity to create my very own 'moulded chocolate' with the Lindt professionals, so I pulled out my credit card and booked tickets to the chocolate making class. To my relief, it was not merely a group of children but a smattering of adult couples and families mixed in together. I had so much fun! One of my favourite parts was definitely getting the opportunity to dress up. Everyone was enthusiastic about donning their chef's hats and aprons; it gave the entire experience a light-hearted vibe.
