A Taste of South Australia Day 6

Today we had a little sleep in after our degusatation last night. After a coffee and a light breakfast we made our way to Maggie Beer’s Farm to join a Gin making course.

The Farm was amazing! Quaint and full of life! I have heard mixed reviews from people throughout the years about Maggie’s farm, but our experience was exceptional. If nothing else, attending the Gin school was well worth the effort.

The Gin event was amazing, hosted by the Barossa Gin School, we learned about the history of Gin and the process of creating our own unique botanical Gin. I selected several flavours to accompany my juniperberry and coriander seed base, including mango, coconut, orange peel, Australian honey bush, star anise and Australian lemon myrtle. The process of tasting the flavours and smelling the bouquet before settling on a flavour and scent was fascinating.

As our Gins brewed in the shed, we were treated to lunch in Maggie Beer’s Eatery, three courses and paired wines. Once again, the food and the portion sizes were out of this world. I have to say, the last time I recall eating something so well thought out (besides the night before), we were enjoying Christmas dinner at Picasso Bellagio, Las Vegas. For anyone wondering, Picasso is a Michellin awarded restaurant.

We finished the event by bottling our gins and deciding if we wanted to add colours. One couple opted to add hybiscus flowers which will turn the liquid pink, the rest of the group opted for sweet pea powder which when mixed with tonic water, turns the blue gin purple. After bottling our gins we made our way to Seppeltfield Estate.

The afternoon wrapped up with a trip to Hentley Farm for a wine before making our way to Chateau Tanunda for a guided tasting. After all the eating and wine-ing from the previous two days, we had bacon and egg breakfast burgers for dinner in the Cottage.
